Moruya Hospital, NSW

Temporary modular surgery solution allows a regional NSW hospital to continue providing services during Operating Theatre refurbishment

Moruya Hospital, NSW - Aspen Medical Mobile Health unit

Background

Located in the Eurobodalla Shire on the South Coast of NSW, Moruya Hospital is a medium sized regional hospital.

Over a six-week period from early January until late February 2016 the hospital’s two operating theatres were undergoing refurbishment. The improvement work included upgrading the theatre’s air conditioning, installing new theatre lights and service pendants.

In order to limit the inconvenience to the community, NSW Health contracted Aspen Medical’s modular clinical infrastructure solutions to support the hospital over the period.

The unit was deployed on time to ensure continuity of service and the operating teams began services immediately following orientation.

The 13 metre long unit’s facilities include:

  • fully functional operating table
  • air conditioning
  • theatre lights
  • pre–op and post-op patient areas
  • change rooms
  • x-ray viewing panel
  • surgical scrub bay
  • clinical basins
  • washer disinfector
  • secure drug storage
  • surgical timer/clock
  • fluid and blanket warmer
  • back-up generator.

Deployment of the modular unit allowed Moruya District Hospital to maintain activity at 80% of target for the year-to-date to that point including general surgery, gynaecological procedures and a number of LUCS (Lower Uterine Caesarean Section).

It means we can continue as normal with both elective and emergency surgery in the Eurobodalla.

Lisa Kennedy, GM – Eurobodalla Health Service

We maintained our activity at 80% of our target, […] we are very happy with this and will meet our target for the year.

Leanne Ovington, Director of Nursing and Midwifery

Challenges

  • long road journey in inclement weather
